The chipmaker doesn’t plan to ship PCs with a separate AI engine tied to the GPU. Thankfully, AMD is working on a new range of CPUs with AI technology which addresses Microsoft’s concerns.

Microsoft needs a dedicated AI engine to improve the tech in the OS. “AI is going to reinvent how you do everything on Windows, quite literally,” Panos Panay told the audience without getting into much detail about how AI will empower Windows users. At CES 2023, Panos suggested that Windows will be betting big on AI with several features, including vastly improved voice and video capabilities to make you look better in video calls. This will be more experimental than even the existing ‘Dev’ channel, and Microsoft says it’ll be used to “preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting release to customers”.During the AMD keynote at CES 2023, Microsoft’s Panos Panay, chief product officer, discussed the future of Windows and AI.

Just a few days later, in March 2023, Microsoft launched a new fourth ‘Canary’ channel of the Windows Insider Program. That may just mean a future update, but a new major version would make a lot of sense. Then, in an interview with The Verge, Microsoft head of consumer marketing Yusuf Mehdi mentioned “develop future versions of Windows” in reference to AI features. We can’t verify how accurate this is, but the leaker in question deid reveal full Intel Xeon chip specs before they launched. In February 2023, reported on a since deleted tweet from leaker where the OS list for an upcoming Intel Meteor Lake desktop CPU apparently included Windows 12. Both articles cite author Zac Bowden’s ‘sources’, but he has a strong track record for Windows news. A subsequent March 2023 article details some of the upgrades you can expect. A July 2022 Windows Central article suggested a Windows 11 successor is in the works, although there’s no guarantee it’ll be known as Windows 12.
